A Tech-Forward Approach to Traditional Problems

We’ve put together a comprehensive list that includes everything from emergency plumbing services, slab leak repairs, leaky faucets, and faulty garbage disposals. These items top the list of most common plumbing repairs. However, they hardly complete it!

Let’s dive into the most frequently asked plumbing questions we receive.

Piping material will vary based on a number of factors. The largest factor being the age of the home. Below is a guide to help you determine what your home uses:

  • Cast Iron: Black in finish, this type of piping was used in the 1960s.
  • Copper: Used from 1970 to the early 2000s, these pipes are a bronzed color. They slowly fade to a deep rust or brown color over time. They typically last about 50 years.
  • Galvanized Steel: If pipes are a gray metal color, they’re likely made of galvanized steel. This material is cheaper than copper and was often used in homes leading up to the 1970s. The material was used less when builders discovered it only lasted for about 40 years.
  • PB (polybutylene): This piping is usually marked with “PB2110.” These flexible pipes are usually gray but can also be black or blue.
  • PEX (cross-linked polyethylene): Plastic tubing that is usually white, red, or blue and used to indicate hot and cold lines. Plumbers use this type of material because of its flexibility.
  • PVC (polyvinyl-chloride): The white plastic pipes are most commonly seen under your kitchen or bathroom sinks, used as drain pipes.

Plumbing problems are sure to happen. Even in newer homes, clogged drains or a water leak can show when you least expect it. Whether you’re living through the repairs in an older home, or just purchasing a new home and want to be prepared, these are the most common plumbing problems we see:

  • Clogged toilets
  • Clogged drains
  • Garbage disposal issues
  • Leaking faucets
  • Leaking pipes
  • Low water pressure
  • Running toilets
  • Sewer smell inside the home
  • Sewage backup
  • Slow draining sinks
  • Water heaters needing repair

DIY methods of drain cleaning never come without the possibility of consequences. And if you were not aware, consequences in plumbing can get expensive quickly. That is why having our team of professional plumbers take care of it from the beginning, is most often the least expensive option. Things like drain snaking your drain with a wire hanger or using chemicals can make an issue worse. Your drains are an essential part of your property that should be taken care of by trained professionals. At-home methods of drain cleaning involve guesswork by the owner or renter. Often, they only temporarily mask your plumbing problems vs. solving them. Snaking a drain on your own will not reach deeper clogs within your pipes. Additionally, chemical drain cleaners use toxic ingredients. These ingredients can create a sludge within your pipes. Often, this sludge can stay within your pipes for long periods of time.

Non-toxic hydrojetting is the best treatment for cleaning your plumbing system. Hydrojetting should be conducted by our plumbing professionals to ensure it is done correctly.  It avoids creating unnecessary damage to your plumbing system. Contact us for more information on our hydrojetting service!

Hydrojetting forces water through the pipes at nearly 4000 PSI. Thus, allowing us to remove buildup, debris, and even tree roots. This high-pressure water flushes away the debris, allowing water and waste to flow through your plumbing freely.

Clogged pipes are never fun. However, addressing the problem immediately, will always prevent further costly damage. Whether it’s a slow-draining tub or a sewer line blockage, the sooner you address it, the better. One of the best ways to prevent a clogged pipe, is to watch what you put down your drains and in your toilet. Here is a great guide:

  • Run cold water when using the garbage disposal.
  • Use a drain strainer if there is no garbage disposal.
  • Do not pour grease or oil down your drain.
  • Run hot water to rinse away grease after doing the dishes.
  • Clear shower and bath drain stoppers frequently.
  • Don’t flush anything down the toilet other than waste and toilet paper.
  • Regularly maintain and pump your septic tank.
  • Do not put coffee grounds, bones, grease, fruit peels or other fibrous foods in disposal.

Plumbing problems don’t just occur during regular business hours. When leaks and clogs present themselves on the weekend or the middle of the night, you must determine if it constitutes a call to your San Antonio emergency plumber. Each homeowner will ultimately decide what ranks as an emergency, but our checklist can help:

  • Does the problem only affect one faucet, drain, or shower?
    • If the problem is secluded to only one pipe, it can likely wait until Monday morning.
  • Can you shut off a water valve to make the problem stop?
    • If you can pause the problem temporarily, you might be able to wait until normal business hours to call your plumber.
  • Does the water work?
    • If your water is completely shut off (and it’s not a municipality problem) call your emergency plumber.
  • Is flooding occurring?
    • If a burst pipe or water main break is causing flooding in or outside of your home, you’re dealing with an emergency. Give us a call!

Detecting a water leak can be difficult if your home is built on a slab or you have underground pipes. Common signs of a water leak include:

  • Damp or spongy flooring
  • An unexpected increase in monthly water bill
  • Sound of running water coming from walls
  • Loss in water pressure
  • Your grass is greener in one part of the yard

If you experience any of these issues, contact Hydrostatic Plumbing & Air for our leak detection services.

Slab leaks occur when a water pipe beneath the foundation, bursts or leaks. An underground leak can cause the soil to become saturated. Thus, causing the slab to shift and/or sink. A spot repair technique is the most common repair. If the piping beneath the slab is old or suffering advanced corrosion, a more permanent repair may be to repipe or move the plumbing. Ask us about our Maintenance Plan!

A typical water heater lasts 8 to 12 years. However, it is important to note that routine maintenance can extend the life of your water heater. If you have a traditional tank, draining the water heater once yearly will help rid the unit of sediment and minerals that have settled. If your water heater is newer and showing signs of trouble, give us a call and we can get it running efficiently.

Several factors go into determining the best temperature for your water heater. The EPA recommends a setting between 120 and 140 degrees. It’s important to not go below that recommendation as bacteria can grow in water that is too cool. Thus, posing health issues and threatening your family’s health. If the temperature is set too high, you’ll waste energy and risk  burns when using the water. We are more than happy to help you with this service, just give us a call!

A clogged toilet is never fun to deal with. Further, it can create a health hazard if not handled immediately. If your toilet isn’t flushing, try removing the clog with one of these methods:

  • Plunger: Seal the plunger around the toilet drain and plunge rapidly several times. If the plunger doesn’t release the clog, try a plumbing snake.
  • Plumbing Snake or Auger: A plumbing snake can be pushed through the toilet drain to grab a clog.

If neither of these methods work and the water from the toilet is not releasing, call us immediately. We are your local San Antonio plumber!

A few signs that it may be time to replace your toilet include:

  • You have continuous clogs.
  • You must use multiple flushes after each use.
  • The age of your toilet (toilets 10 years or older aren’t energy efficient).
  • You have ongoing leaks.

Tree roots that invade your pipes can create massive damage if not handled quickly. Tree roots can break through underground plumbing, blocking the flow of water and waste to and from your home. To avoid tree root invasion, try one of these methods:

  • Tree Removal: Professionally remove and problematic trees. The cost of tree removal will be minimal compared to constantly repairing your plumbing.
  • Root Barrier: Install a root barrier around any new trees. The barrier will keep the roots from overtaking your pipes.
  • Routine Plumbing Maintenance: Have a camera inspection performed every two to three years to detect potentially invasive roots. You can spot small plumbing concerns before they become expensive repairs. Ask about our Maintenance Plan!
  • Sewer Line Cleaning: Hydrojetting is environmentally friendly and a great way to efficiently clean your pipes. The intense water pressure can cut through clogs, debris, and tree roots.

Damage caused by broken pipes is one of the most common homeowners insurance claims. Most insurance companies will cover damage caused by leaks and burst pipes. However, it is best to talk to your insurance company to know what exactly is covered. There are steps you can take to avoid broken pipes and appliances that leak. They include:

  • Properly caulked tubs and showers.
  • Check for leaking faucets both inside and outside.
  • Insulate pipes during the winter months.
  • Inspect appliance hoses on your dishwasher or washing machine regularly and replace as needed.

Prevent frozen pipes by following these steps:

  1. Consider running a heating cable along the pipes before covering as the cable will keep the pipes at a constant temperature.
  2. Look for visible cracks near your foundation and use spray foam or caulk to fill any cracks.
  3. Shut off outdoor water valves and be sure to allow excess water to drain before covering faucets.
  4. Leave cabinet doors open to allow the warm air in your home to reach the pipes.
  5. Annual HVAC system checks prevent your heating system from crashing during the winter.
  6. Slowly drip your faucets to help prevent your pipes from freezing.
